Zinger vs McSpicy vs McChicken, the real numbers
The Zinger wins. A Zinger is 448 calories with 26.2 grams of protein. A McSpicy is 554 calories with 28.1 grams. Nearly the same protein, 106 fewer calories, and less sodium too. The McChicken is the lightest of the three at 430 calories but it only has 16.2 grams of protein, so it's the worst of them if you care what the calories are buying you.
Here's all of it side by side, from KFC's and McDonald's own figures.
| Item | kcal | kJ | Protein g | Fat g | Carbs g | Sugars g | Sodium mg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zinger Burger KFC | 448 | 1,874 | 26.2 | 22.5 | 34.4 | 4.4 | 944 |
| McSpicy Burger McDonald's | 554 | 2,318 | 28.1 | 26.6 | 47.3 | 7.2 | 1,162 |
| McChicken McDonald's | 430 | 1,799 | 16.2 | 19.7 | 45.2 | 7.6 | 652 |
| Double McChicken McDonald's | 621 | 2,598 | 27.5 | 29.5 | 58.8 | 7.8 | 937 |
| Original Crispy Burger KFC | 448 | 1,874 | 24.7 | 22.3 | 35.9 | 4.3 | 776 |
Zinger vs McSpicy
These are the two people actually mean when they ask. Same idea, spicy crumbed chicken thigh in a bun with mayo and lettuce, and they come out surprisingly different.
The Zinger is 448 calories. The McSpicy is 554. That gap is about a hash brown. On protein it's 26.2 against 28.1, close enough to ignore. Per 100 calories the Zinger is 5.8 and the McSpicy is 5.1, which is a clear win for KFC.
Sodium is 944 mg for the Zinger and 1,162 mg for the McSpicy. Both are high. Both are about half of what most people should have in a day, in one burger. The Zinger's a bit lower.
Taste is your call. I think the Zinger's the better burger too, but I'm from Adelaide and that's a KFC town.
Zinger vs McChicken
The McChicken is 430 calories, which is 18 fewer than a Zinger. It's also only 16.2 grams of protein, which is 10.0 grams less. That works out to 3.8 grams of protein per 100 calories against the Zinger's 5.8.
If you're only counting calories, the McChicken is lighter. If you're counting protein as well, which you should be on a diet, the Zinger gives you a lot more for a small number of extra calories. I'd take the Zinger every time.
The Double McChicken is the one people order to fix the protein problem. It's 621 calories for 27.5 grams, so you've now paid 173 calories more than a Zinger for about the same protein. It doesn't fix anything.
The Zinger family
KFC has a lot of Zingers now, and the differences are bigger than the names suggest.
| Item | kcal | kJ | Protein g | Fat g | Carbs g | Sugars g | Sodium mg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zinger Burger KFC | 448 | 1,874 | 26.2 | 22.5 | 34.4 | 4.4 | 944 |
| Zinger Bacon & Cheese Burger KFC | 549 | 2,297 | 33.1 | 30.0 | 36.2 | 5.7 | 1,384 |
| Zinger Crunch Burger KFC | 568 | 2,377 | 29.7 | 29.3 | 45.2 | 8.2 | 1,231 |
| Zinger Stacker Burger KFC | 737 | 3,084 | 51.2 | 37.3 | 48.8 | 9.3 | 1,996 |
| Zinger Fillet Piece KFC | 224 | 937 | 20.4 | 12.0 | 9.1 | 0.4 | 679 |
The Zinger Bacon & Cheese is 549 calories for 33.1 grams, so the extra 101 calories over the plain Zinger buy you 6.9 grams of protein, which is a fair trade. The Zinger Crunch is 568 for 29.7, so you're paying for the crunch and getting nothing back. The Stacker is 737 calories with 1,996 mg of sodium, which is nearly a full day's salt.
And the Zinger fillet on its own, no bun, is 224 calories for 20.4 grams. That's the actual answer to "what's the healthiest spicy chicken at a drive through". Nobody orders it. You can.
The Original Recipe burger, for completeness
The Original Recipe burger is the same calories as a Zinger at 448, with 24.7 grams of protein and 776 mg of sodium. Slightly less protein, noticeably less salt. If you don't want the heat, it's just as good an order.
