How to eat fast food on a cut without blowing it
I've lost weight while eating fast food three or four times a week. Not because it's a good idea, but because that's what my week looks like, and I'd rather have a plan that survives real life than one that falls apart the first time I'm hungry at a drive through. This is the plan.
The five rules
Order the protein, not the meal. A combo is a burger plus 400 calories of chips and drink. Order the burger. If you're still hungry, order a second protein thing, not chips. A 6 pack of nuggets at 229 calories fills you up more than medium fries at 315 and it's got 12.9 grams of protein to the fries' 5.0.
Judge food by protein per 100 calories. Over 6 is good, over 8 is excellent. It's the number the whole app is built on, and it's the fastest way to tell a real meal from a snack that costs the same.
Skip anything with a wrap, "loaded", "Cali" or "stacker" in the name. Every one of those is the heavy version of something lighter on the same menu.
Drink water or zero sugar. A 600ml Coke is about 260 calories of nothing. I'm not going to pretend that's controversial.
Know the number before you order, not after. That's the part most people get wrong, and it's the reason I built the app. Guessing that a burger is "probably 500" is how you end up 300 over every day.
A full day of fast food, around 1,500 calories
This is a real day I've eaten. Three chains, three meals, every number from the chains' own figures.
Breakfast at Maccas, a Double Bacon & Egg McMuffin. 327 calories, 21.5 grams of protein.
Lunch at Nando's, a quarter chicken with a garden salad. 387 calories, 53.4 grams.
Dinner at KFC, a Zinger with a regular coleslaw. 541 calories, 27.3 grams.
That's about 1,255 calories and just over 100 grams of protein, which leaves room for a coffee with milk, a piece of fruit and a small snack, and you're at 1,500 with a day that most people would call a diet. Swap the Zinger for three pieces of Original Recipe and the three meals come to about 1,510 calories with close to 140 grams of protein, which is a serious training day once you add the extras.
The thing to notice is that none of those meals is small. The quarter chicken and salad is a plate of food. The Zinger's a Zinger. You're not eating less, you're eating the right thing.
What a 1,200 calorie fast food meal looks like
People search this, so here it is. A Quarter Pounder, medium fries and a medium Coke is over 1,000 calories. A Zinger Stacker and large chips is over 1,300. A GYG Cali burrito on its own is 966. A Double Whopper and large chips is nearly 1,300.
That's the point. A 1,200 calorie meal isn't a special order. It's the normal combo, and it's the whole day's worth of food from the list above in one sitting. Same chains, same food, the only difference is what you ticked on the screen.
Sodium on a cut
You'll notice it on the scales. On a day like the one above, the Nando's and the KFC alone are over 2,100 mg of sodium, which is about the daily target for most people before you've counted breakfast, and it'll show up as a kilo of water the next morning. That's not fat. It comes off in a day or two. But if you're weighing yourself daily and wondering why the number jumped after a "good" day, that's usually why. The app shows sodium on every item now.
FAQ
Can you eat fast food every day and lose weight?
Yes, if the total is under what you burn. The day above is 1,500 calories from three chains with over 100 grams of protein. Most people would lose weight on it. The reason it usually doesn't work is the combo meal, which turns any of those orders into a 1,000 calorie meal.
What's the best fast food for a cut?
Anything with grilled or roast chicken and no chips. Nando's, Red Rooster, Oporto, KFC's chicken pieces, Grill'd's chicken burgers, the Grilled Chicken at Hungry Jack's, and a Quarter Pounder or McMuffin at Maccas. I keep a list of a meal under 500 calories at every chain.
How many calories should I eat on a cut?
That depends on your size and how much you move, and I'm not going to give you a number. What I can tell you is that 1,200 a day is very low for most adults and not something to do for long without talking to someone who knows you. The point of this page is that fast food fits a sensible deficit, not that you should eat as little as possible.
