How much sugar is in a Boost Juice

An original size Mango Magic has 75.7 grams of sugar. A 600ml Coke has about 64. So the most popular smoothie at Boost has more sugar than a bottle of Coke, and it's not close. The Green Tea Mango Mantra is 86.8 grams. The Passion Mango is 83.9.

Most of that is fruit sugar, and people will tell you that's different. Your body mostly doesn't care. It's still 420 calories in a cup you drink in ten minutes and forget about.

There are three Boost drinks I'd actually order, and they're all in the protein range. More on those below.

The full list, worst to best

Here's the original size of the popular ones, sorted by sugar. Boost publishes all of this and the numbers are from them.

A few things to notice. The Raspberry Ripe is 478 calories, which is a Double Cheeseburger's worth of energy in a cup. The Banana Buzz has 64.2 grams of sugar and people order it as a breakfast. And even the Two & Five juice, which is marketed as your vegetables, is 35.7 grams of sugar for 170 calories with almost no protein.

The three worth ordering

The Wondermelon is the best thing Boost sells. 191 calories, 13.1 grams of protein, 24.8 grams of sugar. That's about a third of the sugar in a Mango Magic, and nothing else on the menu gives you that much protein for under 200 calories.

The Protein Supreme is the one for after the gym. 502 calories with 29.1 grams of protein and 40.5 grams of sugar. That's a lot of calories for a drink, but it's a lot of protein too, and the sugar is half a Mango Magic's.

The Power Plant Protein splits the difference. 281 calories, 11.4 grams of protein, 38.1 grams of sugar.

The Gym Junkie is the trap in this section. It's got "gym" in the name and 20.5 grams of protein, but it also has 54.2 grams of sugar, which is the same as the Choc Muscle Hustle and more than a can of Coke. If you want the protein, the Protein Supreme has more of it for less sugar.

Size matters more than flavour

Every Boost comes in three sizes and the original is the big one. The medium Wondermelon is 156 calories and 21.0 grams of sugar against the original's 191 and 24.8. Going down a size is the easiest cut you can make and you won't notice it.

Is Boost Juice healthy?

Compared to a soft drink, it's got fibre and some vitamins and a bit of protein, so it's better. Compared to eating fruit, it's worse, because you'd never sit down and eat two mangoes and a banana in ten minutes but you'll drink them. Compared to nothing, which is what most people would have otherwise, it's 400 calories you didn't need.

If it's a treat, get the small. If it's a meal, get a Protein Supreme and count it as one. If it's a habit, that's where the weight comes from.
